49: Downsize Your Life

The number of so called "downshifters" was estimated to be four million last year. " It's driven by the people wanting the time and energy for things that the cannot do working the hours that they do," says a datamoniter analyst. " After years striving for material wealth, people are saying they need to change their life style and are happy to 'pay' for it by means of accepting a lower income.
But opting out of the rat race deos not have to be as dramatic as relocating to a rural Welsh farmhouse. Organisers of the International Downshifting Week held each April suggest "dippling your toes in" with the simple steps such as starting a compost heap, cutting up a credit card or hand making a birthday card for a friend. As someone once so eloquently sang, the best things in life are free.
